Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Olsen began performing in coffee bars in the city during her teenage years, eventually becoming more independent and tapping into the community of artists who share similar views. Olsen moved to Chicago in 2006 eventually working in collaboration with California artist Emmett Kelly, who is part of his band known as the Cairo Gang.
